I was challenged during my semester-long sabbatical from teaching to not only work on academic goals, but personal ones. I’m a mom in my mid-40’s and had never had an established fitness routine. I’d made significant changes in my diet in the past few years (giving up diet soda, cutting out refined sugar, increasing my water consumption, etc.) but it wasn’t enough. I was starting to feel weak, achy and disconnected from my body, which was both new and scary. After considering different options and completing the two-week trial, I signed on as a member of Team Howell Fitness. I was pleasantly surprised at how warmly I was welcomed and continue to be included and encouraged. In three months, I have started to notice the benefits of strength training in my everyday life such as being able to lift heavy bags of potting soil and having better range of motion and flexibility overall. I look forward to going to the gym because I like to see how I am progressing in my training program, getting stronger every day. I spent my 20’s and 30’s doing endless hours of cardio, running my body into the ground trying to lose weight and “get in shape”. I found myself losing and gaining the same 10 pounds over and over again, while dealing with numerous overuse injuries like shin splints, tendonitis, and hip problems. I thought lifting heavy weights was only for men and would only make me bulky.
I have been lifting at Team Howell for almost 2 years now, and my quality of life has drastically improved because of it. I walk taller and with more confidence. I lift more weight than I ever thought I’d be able to. Mike and Cassy monitor my lifting progress to get me stronger while being smart and safe about the approach. Every lift I do is watched for proper form. They have given me guidance how to fuel my body so that I can lift heavy, recover, and get stronger. I am so grateful to have this program and coaching available.

I began strength training 2 years ago in October which is the same month in which I have my yearly physical. Not knowing much about strength training, I put my trust in Mike and Cassey and I began my journey. After the first year my doctor reported my blood sugar levels, my cholesterol levels, and my red blood count levels had all improved. The doctor said to keep doing what I was doing and I did. October of 2018 another trip to the doctor’s office and again all of the above mentioned numbers had improved. At my age, 58, and with my family history, having all of these numbers improve is a very welcome thing. I can attribute the improved numbers to a few things, strength training, eating healthier, and a great place to go to get in a workout or just talk with some friends. Yes, you are not just a member at Team Howell you are a friend to others.
The trainers are not only there to teach strength training, but can help you with healthy eating habits. They attend conferences often in order to keep up with their training. They offer their customers many ways to get in shape and stay healthy. Your goals are their goals.  -Pat B


Team Howell Fitness gives strength to your body, mind, and soul. More than 7 years ago I took my first steps into the gym terrified as I never thought of myself as an athletic person. Over the last 7 years, the gym has evolved as I have. I'm both physically and mentally stronger and have learned I'm much more capable than I sometimes think I am. So many things to love about this gym. Coaches Michael Howell and Cassy Thurow truly care about the members. It isn't about fitting you into their program, they fit the program to you, your ability, lifestyle, and schedule. The members have become family and on days when I'm most stressed and tired, the atmospere is just what I need, a place to go to be energized, not worn out. Team Howell is a culture of support and challenging yourself personally, not competing against others. Over the past couple of weeks, I've hit several PRs: 250lb squat, 152lb bench, 96lb overhead press, and 240.5lb deadlift. These are acheivements I couldn't even imagine 7 years ago. It has included a lot of ups and downs, but has consistently included positive support from everyone at Team Howell Fitness BLOG.
